Great Puppy Classes
Monday, July 13, 2009
I didn't think I needed to take my puppy to puppy obedience classes, but I am so glad i did. I was thinking "how hard could it be to train a puppy". Well, let me tell you my puppy was crazy. Then I met a lady at the park and she had a puppy the same age as mine. Her puppy was awesome. Baxter walked nicely on a leash and came when he was called, even if he was playing with my puppy. She told me that her puppy was going to dog training classes in Cheshire at the Smartydog Center. I checked out their web site to find the next available puppy class and signed my puppy up for puppy classes. The classes were very helpful, we both learned a lot. It's working so well that I am going to sign up for their Behavioral Obedience Course too.

This is a great place

My dog club just had an outing at the Smartydog Center. The class was 90 minutes long, but the time just flew by as we were all having so much fun. Martha was very good at knowing just what each dog needed to help them learn without pushing them too hard. I'd never done foundational cross training with my dog before as I've always trained towards specific goals. After 22 years of training It's time to re-think my training approach. I can definately see that her style would be great for my dogs.

Excellent Training Service
Ok, my story goes like this. Some of you may know how this goes. My brother bought a puppy for our elderly mother. Six months later the no longer so cute puppy isn't housebroken and plays much to rough with my mother. So I gave Mom a gift certificate to the Smartydog Center for Mothers Day. Mom went to the classes each week with Sophie and I can't believe the change in that puppy, it's amazing. Mom liked the classes so much she has signed up for another course just to have fun with her puppy. So now Mom is happy and I am no longer mad at my brother... a puppy for mom was a good idea after all. ( Thanks Smartydog )
Saying thank you very much is an understatement as far as I am
concerned for how you have improved Rascal. You were my last hope.
Rascal had flunked out of four (4) prior classes and one (1)
evaluation promised not much hope. I had been told by one instructor
to take him home and just love him because beyond that there was
nothing much I could do with him.
I remember calling you to register him for Confidence Classes. You were very willing to take the dog into your class and I just wanted to get him registered before you met him for too long and changed your mind.
You were Rascal's last hope. You explained to me what I could expect
and I was very desperate at this point to just get him registered and
see what the results were. Martha you spoke Rascal's language. That dog went from a scared timid animal to an almost normal Keeshond.
Martha you are fantastic. You knew exactly how to introduce him to the
exercises in class so he would not fail. Thank you so very very much.
I thought my dog, Trooper was an idiot (okay not really) but he just wasn't learning to behave like my other dogs. Fortunately I found out that I didn't know how to teach him, now he's doing wonderfully. We took him to the smartydog center to teach him to behave and now I look forward to going to class just to relax and have some fun with him.

Pat R. from Meriden:
This is a great place to
bring your dog for
training classes. They
also have a lot of
activities like camping
with your dog (in
doors), movie night and
doggy line dancing. They
even have a kiddie ride
for your dog to ride in,
my dog loved it.
Hi Martha,
Molly and I very much
enjoyed your class. I
was so nervous in the
beginning that she might
really try to hurt
another dog...you really
helped me help her!!!!
I know that she has made
great improvement in
many areas........but,
she still has so much to
learn (and
internalize)We will
without a doubt be
joining you for the next
small dog class
beginning in June.
Thanks for keeping the
class going with your
funny jokes and stories
and for helping me keep
everything in
perspective!!!!!.
See you soon,
Marty
You'd be proud of Taz, he
received his Novice Rally
Title this weekend.
He got his rally
novice title on
Sunday with a score of
99 to
finish in first place, with
the fastest time. Our other
scores were
as follows. April 11th we
scored 100 receiving second
place behind a faster doggie
and April 18th we scored
97 for first place.
Lorrie is a fabulous
teacher.
I thank you both for all
your efforts and experience
that made us a "smarty"
team.
Now we're ready for novice
obedience and rally
advanced!!!!
See you Tuesday,
Andrea
Hi
Marty,
Today
after we got back from a short
car ride we did the usual
routine of opening the gate and
letting Chip and Jazz into their
back yard. We've done this
dozens and dozens of times
without any incident.
Today
was different. Little did I
know but there was a rabbit
hiding in one of the shrubs just
outside the gate. Jazzy knew
and as soon as she was off the
leash, turned and started
chasing that critter.
She chased it up the hill and
through the woods - running and
jumping and having a great
time. I called her with a "Jazz
Here!" She stopped chasing the
rabbit, turned towards me and
ran right back to me.
She actually looked happy
bounding back to me jumped up
into my arms.
While
I didn't have any cookies in my
pocket (big omission) she did
get lots of "good girls" and
plenty of rewards when we got
into the house.
Thank
you - The training worked!
Martha -- you would be so proud
of Sweetie. Not only did she
greet each and every one of my
parents' guests at a recent
party, she's been checking
everyone out ever since class
ended, and actually met a pair
of beagles more shy than she is.
Sweetie just got out of the
emergency vet hospital. She made
it through the trauma of
hospitalization just fine. She
actually liked the vet and went
up to him several times on her
own. He says that she just needs
more time to adjust and adapt,
and he didn't think her anxiety
was that bad. In other words,
thanks to you, Sweetie is making
leaps and bounds. You helped her
find her confidence, and that's
really made a striking
difference. She's much more
affectionate and really happy,
even with not feeling well..
Are you settled on a new
location yet for classes? I
think Sweetie could really
benefit from continuing. Let us
know when you do. And Martha,
thanks again for everything.
People told me that Sweetie
wasn't going to change, but I
believed in her. You obviously
know your dogs, and I think you
insured that Sweetie finds her
inner puppy. -- Sara M. Barton
Highly recommended for
basic obedience training. This
is a must, Martha is the best
trainer that I know of!

I am signing Cody up for another
course. He has calmed down a
lot. He is like another
dog when I come home from work,
calm. He comes out of the
crate tail wagging& does a long
stretch.
You have made a big difference
for us.
Thanks
I just wanted to thank you so
much for all the extra work you
did with Roxy and me. The
classes we took with you were
the best classes I have ever
taken and they really do help
build the bond between dog and
owner. I won't be going back to
Glastonbury without you
there, but I will be looking for
something else closer to home. Wish you the best; Roxy sends a big slobbery kiss
and of course some loud
barking! You are a great
trainer.

They
offer special training for
little dogs
I was reluctant to take my
dog to training classes because
she is so small and I thought
she would be overwhelmed. I was
pleased to hear that Candlewick
Kennels has classes especially
for small dogs. Since the
training classes my little dog
has become much more out going
and comfortable in strange
places. I am very pleased with
the training classes at
Candlewick kennels.
